Our aim:

To transform Teaching and Learning

The principles on which we build our aims

Relationships underlie the whole of our educational processes: Samuel Ward is a learning community where all have a stake in decision making.  Empathy, respect, trust are key factors in supporting each other to improving teaching and learning.

The role of the teacher: We are committed to creating a community of individuals who are united in a shared experience of trying to improve together. Our teachers serve as role models to students by demonstrating a willingness to learn, to change and work together. We seek development at fours levels – self, team school and community.

The role of our learners: Although our teachers play a key role, we see our learners as having a responsibility for creating the learning environment and maintaining an understanding of their learning. The voices of learners play a big part in shaping their own learning experience

Personal meaning. At Samuel Ward we regard each individual learner, whatever their role in the school as unique, someone who has their own talent and capacity to contribute to their own learning, to the school and the community at large. We focus on enabling the development and fulfilment of individuals’ full potential.

The rational and the affective. We believe that teachers need to consider not only how to develop students’ cognitive, rational, faculties but also how they can help students use feelings and emotions both in critical thinking and as a means of reflection.
